We all have things we don’t like about our physical appearance, and an increasing number of people are choosing to confront their various complaints and banish them forever with cosmetic surgery. It’s only really in the last few years that surgery has been a realistic option to anyone as long as they can afford to pay for it, and the general public are queuing up to have their problem areas nipped, tucked, plumped and sucked. After years of watching all those perfect celebrities looking gorgeous on TV and dreaming of how it would feel to look like that, it’s great to know that now we can. But it’s important to remember that no surgery is entirely without risk even by today’s standards, and the decision to go ahead with should always be considered carefully.

Although it seems like minor cosmetic procedures are becoming as much a part of everyday life as trips to the hairdresser, it’s not like getting a new haircut – signing up for liposuction, a tummy tuck or breast augmentation means making permanent modifications to your body. The chances of anything going wrong during a standard cosmetic procedure may be miniscule but they are there and there are people who have been left with unfortunate permanent reminders of their bad experiences. In all but a tiny minority of cases though the results are exactly as expected, and most people come away from cosmetic surgery happier and more confident than before.

And that’s the whole point, after all – it's not about the way others see you but more that you feel better and more confident yourself. You feel good when you know you look your best, your self esteem is higher and you feel like you can do anything. Many people who have serious issues with the way they look also struggle with low self esteem. This in turn can lead to a spiral of depression and low confidence which affects people everyday and prevents them making the most of their life. If a simple surgical procedure could rid them of these hang-ups then surely it can only be a good thing, as long as they are sure it's what they want and they made the decision for the right reasons.
