Knife Clasp Deformity
What is a knife-clasp deformity?
I had an x-ray of my spine done, and the Dr. told me I had a knife-clasp deformity of my L5/S1 vertebrae. He said it was nothing to worry about, but I would like to know exactly what it is and maybe see a diagram.
Please give me a description in layman's terms, don't copy and paste from a website please!
a constellation of findings in degenerative disease of the spine characterized by hypertrophy of the spinous process of the fifth lumbar vertebra, which extends through a spina bifida defect into the spinal canal on hyperextension of the back (Fig.1). , CT scanning and MR imaging. This deformity is well seen with radiography
DR/RB
argh ... missed that part... it makes it a little harder.
An array of findings... so multiple points of interest in dealing with spine degeneration (spine is losing mass) this can be seen as hypertrophy (which is the enlarging of an organ) of the spinous process which is where the muscles and ligaments connect to the spine... the part that looks like spikes if looking at a spinal column from the side... its a v shape protruding towards your back... each vertebrae has one. L5 S1 ... L5 is the fifth lumbar which is connected to the S1 ... Lumbar 5 ... the last and lowest part of the lumbar section of your back... about 6 inches above your butt (pardon, but that is the most layman terms I get) S1 is Sacrum 1 ... the sacrum is the part that people really refer to as the tailbone, but it is 5 bones that are fused together... still has 5 sections.
anyway.
the spina bifida part means that the spinal column was not properly fused at birth.
any better?
Essentially upon certain extensions... the spinous process... the piece that sticks out in the back is enlarged and due to a gap it is able to press on the gap between S1 and S2 ...
I would draw a diagram... but it looks like a jack knife from the side

This picture shows it if you can decipher my explanation properly then you will probably see what it is ... it is the long piece in the center... you can see that it stretches down to the sacrum.
