Kids Do Some Really Crazy Things
There used to be a TV show that was all about the weird things that children do. While the show politely called them the 'strangest' things, they were often more dumb than strange. While they do get smarter with age, kids can do the most dangerous things, too. That's why you've got to keep dangerous kitchen implements out of their hands.
There are a lot of amusing things that children do with kitchen implements. All kids love to play with an electric hand mixer, for instance. If it's got a battery and is portable, even better. The boys can go play space invaders with it and the girls can mix up mud cookies. Unfortunately, when the battery runs down, they just leave it, thinking it's broken or of no use to them anymore. Meanwhile, you're tearing your hair out, wondering what happened to your mixer.
Things like that are the kinds of things you laugh about together when they get older. There are other kitchen implements though, that never have a happy ending when they get into the hands of small children.
Who would imagine that a Wusthof knife set would look like a collection of toys to a child. Knives are sharp and scary looking. They are even scarier looking than guns, since it should be obvious to anyone that they can do a lot of damage. A gun, on the other hand, doesn't look scary at all, unless you have seen what it can do.
Some kids don't seem to understand that knives are dangerous and should only be handled by adults. They think that if mom can use a knife to cut a cake, they can take it outside to cut up a cardboard box or dig in the soil. Children think they are invincible. They don't understand that one slip of the knife can have devastating consequences.
No one is saying that you have to keep your knives under lock and key like you would a hunting rifle. However, a level of caution is necessary. While knives are out of sight in a drawer, they are not out of the reach of children, who would notice where you keep them. It is probably a better idea to put your sharp knives in a knife block set at the back of the kitchen bench, well out of reach of children.
To children, the world is an amazing place and they naturally want to explore. As their parents, it's our job to keep an eye on them, so they don't get hurt.
